I have a four word management mantra:

Clarity, Neutrality and Grace

I think it would be good if we chant these four words often.

Let’s look at it.

Clarity and Neutrality are fairly self-explanatory. Communicate so as to leave no doubt and keep your personal negative emotions out of it.

But this last word – grace – what’s that all about?

To me, grace comes about when we unconditionally accept an employee without judgement and retain good will and affection for them as a fellow human being.

Maybe they’ve totally crossed the line too many times and you’re going to fire them.

A grace mindset would be – I still have regard for you and your right to choose your behaviors and I wish you well.

Having grace in an employee situation has nothing to do with being soft, giving-in, seeking approval or not upholding firm lines.

It means we uphold them with acceptance and respect for all.

It means we don’t get hung up on prickly, jagged emotions.

We don’t project our “stuff” on them.

It means we give from our hearts whether we’re showing someone the door or showing a new hire around the back room.

We are consistent in our willingness to show grace.

Clarity, Neutrality and Grace,
