Moving a business especially a co-op forward is a team effort.
Our ability to move toward a known goal is a product of harnessing the strengths of team members and then working in unity to carry out decisions.
This provides the focus and power to get things done.
So, what happens when we don’t agree; we don’t see things the same way as others on our team?
Are we acting out our frustrations, disappointments and driving each other crazy?
Well, the gas tank is now empty and we’re not going anywhere.
And this is when the complaining and blaming usually starts and continues.
We’re stuck in the mud and now it’s time to take a good look at ourselves.
If we are serious about achieving our most desired outcomes for our co-ops, we will need a team. None of us can do it alone.
And it comes down to valuing the cohesion of the team at a higher level than our own individualized preferences.
Our goal within our teams is not harmony (we will inevitably have our disagreements and differing points of view), our goal of working together in our teams has to be unity.
It takes each one of us determining how we are going to manage ourselves with others who may see things differently and how we’ll act when decisions are made or people do things we don’t agree with.
We need to become tasked and challenged with how to get over ourselves and let go of being distracted, unproductive, or behaving poorly when things don’t go the way we wish they would.
Do we subtlety work against decisions that we don’t agree with or are we on board because we know without a highly functioning team we’re going nowhere?
This takes practice, commitment, team agreements with accountability, and self-responsibility.
There’s a lot at stake here in the co-op movement.
More than just our personal preferences.
