Recently, I’ve been thinking a lot about the topic of “team building”.
I wrote about it in my last message a few weeks ago (It’s up on my web-site if you missed it)
and the more I think about it, the more a few foundational points come into focus.
It’s like, things that seemed to be a bit lost and shaded in the mist a little while ago have now become crystal clear to me.
So here is another big realization I had.
As managers, it is not incumbent in our positions to become experts at dealing with resistance.
Trying to convince, plead, cajole or otherwise find a peaceful meeting ground of compromise for those on your staff who want you to run the department or store differently is simply a distraction.
Yes, of course we will have differing points of view, opinions and personalities on our team – that’s all good.
However, those who want to ignore your leadership, disrespect your role, disrupt, populate negativity and all the rest, really need to go.
Positive impact takes focus.
Everyone has to be rowing in the same direction or we’re pretty much going nowhere.
We’re trying to accomplish some big things not get bogged down in making the unworkable somehow work.
That mist falling from our eyes means that we’re finally ready to see things that need to be cleaned up, put into order and are now willing to take action.
So there you go.
Team building is a big job and not much else can be built until that first step is strong and together.
I sincerely encourage you to go for it.
