{"id":2252,"date":"2024-07-01T19:46:04","date_gmt":"2024-07-01T19:46:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/merrimanmanagementsupport.com\/?post_type=project&#038;p=2252"},"modified":"2024-07-01T19:46:23","modified_gmt":"2024-07-01T19:46:23","slug":"casual-july-1st","status":"publish","type":"project","link":"http:\/\/merrimanmanagementsupport.com\/index.php\/project\/casual-july-1st\/","title":{"rendered":"Casual &#8211; July 1st"},"content":{"rendered":"[et_pb_section fb_built=&#8221;1&#8243; admin_label=&#8221;section&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;3.22&#8243;][et_pb_row admin_label=&#8221;row&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;3.25&#8243; background_size=&#8221;initial&#8221; background_position=&#8221;top_left&#8221; background_repeat=&#8221;repeat&#8221;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;4_4&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;3.25&#8243; custom_padding=&#8221;|||&#8221; custom_padding__hover=&#8221;|||&#8221;][et_pb_text admin_label=&#8221;Text&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;3.27.4&#8243; background_size=&#8221;initial&#8221; background_position=&#8221;top_left&#8221; background_repeat=&#8221;repeat&#8221;]\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"898\" src=\"http:\/\/merrimanmanagementsupport.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Drawing1-1-1024x898.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2253\" style=\"width:235px;height:auto\" srcset=\"http:\/\/merrimanmanagementsupport.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Drawing1-1-980x859.jpg 980w, http:\/\/merrimanmanagementsupport.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Drawing1-1-480x421.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1024px, 100vw\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Recently I was&nbsp;at a new employee orientation training with some of our new clerks and cashiers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also,&nbsp;in attendance were&nbsp;two&nbsp;of our managers&nbsp;who I had been working with to co-present at the training.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When I entered the room, the managers were already there with some of the new employees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Right away I knew something was off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The managers were casually slumped in their chairs &#8211; nonrelational to the new folks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As we started and went around&nbsp;the room answering&nbsp;some &#8220;get-to-know-you&#8221; questions,&nbsp;the&nbsp;managers&nbsp;were&nbsp;pretty laid back&nbsp;and&nbsp;not really present in their answers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They were being super-casual &#8211; acting like new &#8220;disoriented&#8221;&nbsp;employees themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My insides clenched, I could feel my confusion and&nbsp;frustration.&nbsp;My mind was chattering&nbsp;<em>&#8220;Isn&#8217;t it obvious&nbsp;that their&nbsp;behavior is not setting the right&nbsp;kind of welcome and tone for the orientation training.&nbsp;Arg &#8211; what the heck!<\/em><em>&#8220;.<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We finished the training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I knew I needed to follow up with them and I knew my insides were feeling some heat so I turned my attention to sorting myself out a bit&nbsp;before checking in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As I reflected, I could see the problem was not that these managers were &#8220;blowing it&#8221;, it was more about them being super-casual at a time when they were expected to&nbsp;be intentional and&nbsp;set a tone of leadership. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This insight along with some deep breaths calmed me down and I was ready to pull them into a huddle.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First, I asked,&nbsp;<em>&#8220;How did today&#8217;s session go for you?&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Overall, they thought their session went well and had a few suggestions for how it could be better &#8211; that was fair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then I asked,&nbsp;<em>&#8220;What about the time before your session began and during the intro round?&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both stared at me blankly, almost as though they couldn&#8217;t remember.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I said, &#8220;<em>Here is what I experienced.&nbsp;<u>No engagement with the new employees and lackluster participation in the intro round.<\/u>&nbsp;It was casual, not intentional \u2013&nbsp;It was though you were not mindful of your position and&nbsp;<\/em><em>the kinds of impressions and impacts we have as managers.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They got it right&nbsp;away and we chatted a bit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During&nbsp;our conversation here are a few more things I said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>&#8220;When it comes to managing, casualness often can be cited as one of the reasons that things go south.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/em><em>We all want to be real, genuine and authentic when connecting to staff, however it is important for us to remember that what is real, genuine and authentic right now is that we&#8217;ve agreed to be a manager here at the co-op. We need to remember to fully embody that role when we&#8217;re here.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Of course, setting a casual&nbsp;vibe has its place<\/em><em>&nbsp;<\/em><em>yet it needs to be<\/em><em>&nbsp;<strong>intentional<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/em><em>and thoughtful to our role.&nbsp;As managers we want to remember we<\/em><em>&nbsp;are&nbsp;always&nbsp;leading and steering staff&#8217;s attention&nbsp; &#8211; either consciously or unconsciously.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>This is the way it is.&nbsp; When&nbsp;<\/em><em>we<\/em><em>&#8216;re a manager, every moment is a managerial moment &#8211;&nbsp;<\/em><em>we are all called to&nbsp;<\/em><em>be alive and aware of how&nbsp;<\/em><em>we<\/em><em>&nbsp;want to spend it.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;managers I was talking with&nbsp;are super-wonderful&nbsp;people&nbsp;and like many of us just needed&nbsp;a little&nbsp;nudging.
