They appear and function in a well-tended garden&#8230;those procedures and systems are like the roadmap of how we all work well together. They actually&nbsp;<strong>create the space<\/strong>&nbsp;for flexibility, creativity and innovation to grow. Where staff&#8217;s voice is valued and courted to support us in creating a really great workplace.&nbsp;<br>But then there&#8217;s always something else.&nbsp;<br>Something else behind a manager&#8217;s reluctance&nbsp;to uphold structures and procedures.<br>And I address it by asking them this question.<br><em>&#8220;Are you really afraid of being a robot to standards, systems&nbsp;and procedures, or are you afraid of being committed to and being an important part of the co-op&#8217;s journey forward, because those systems and procedures are how we get there?&#8221;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/em>Well, they usually look a little scared and stunned at that.&nbsp;<br>Then I try to ease the mood up a bit by saying,<em>&nbsp;&#8220;Don&#8217;t worry, we&#8217;re all in the middle ground here &#8211; we&#8217;re all human.&nbsp; We&#8217;re not asking people to commit&nbsp;their souls, yet we are asking our managers to understand what springs forth from well managed structures, systems and procedures.
