Should I keep it all chill?\u00a0 Just button it all up?<\/em><br \/>Here&#8217;s what I think.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/divi:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- divi:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s say, for the sake of discussion,\u00a0that emotions can be divided into 2 parts: push emotions and pull emotions.<br \/>Let&#8217;s call\u00a0<em>push emotions<\/em>\u00a0ones that\u00a0<strong>express negativity<\/strong>\u00a0toward a staff member for something that they&#8217;ve done.\u00a0<em>\u00a0&#8220;I&#8217;m really disappointed\u00a0in you!&#8221;\u00a0 &#8220;I&#8217;m\u00a0so\u00a0frustrated!&#8221;\u00a0 &#8220;How could you mess up like this?&#8221;\u00a0 &#8220;What were you thinking, we talked about this&#8221;.\u00a0\u00a0<\/em>These emotions push away the employee, make them feel bad and imply that the way to get back in our good graces is to\u00a0change\u00a0their\u00a0behavior\u00a0in order to not upset us.\u00a0As a manager at work, these\u00a0kinds of\u00a0emotional expressions\u00a0end up being\u00a0controlling, manipulative and\u00a0dispiriting. These &#8220;push emotions&#8221; give no guidance or direction.\u00a0They\u00a0don&#8217;t\u00a0provide an employee with clarity on what to do.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/divi:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- divi:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Now, what we call\u00a0<em>pull emotions<\/em>\u00a0are ones that\u00a0always treat a staff member with respect and regard no matter what emotional turbulence\u00a0we may be experiencing. They always\u00a0<strong>express positivity<\/strong>\u00a0toward a staff member for something that they&#8217;ve done.\u00a0<em>\u00a0&#8220;I love this end aisle.&#8221;\u00a0 &#8220;Thanks, that really made my day.&#8221;\u00a0 &#8220;Great job on this\u00a0display\u00a0&#8211; it made everyone smile.&#8221;\u00a0 &#8220;It&#8217;s a pleasure to see such great\u00a0teamwork!&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0<\/em>Now these emotions are not open ended.\u00a0 They point to something that was done and<strong>\u00a0pull\u00a0<\/strong>staff forward to do more of it.\u00a0 They imply a path of guidance forward\u00a0that points to the\u00a0good work\u00a0we are seeking\u00a0and focuses\u00a0energy in positive and productive ways.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/divi:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- divi:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0You are pulling forward the best they have to offer, not pushing them forward without direction.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/divi:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- divi:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>So, should I\u00a0express\u00a0emotions at work?<br \/>Yes and no.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/divi:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- divi:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Those &#8220;push emotions&#8221; &#8211; no.\u00a0 Manage yourself and find ways to deal with\u00a0your negative emotions\u00a0in neutral, safe places.\u00a0 Replace\u00a0expressing them\u00a0with solid management skills.\u00a0We can always make our way to a neutralized\u00a0place of grace as we lead with providing clarity.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/divi:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- divi:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<br \/>Those &#8220;pull emotions&#8221; &#8211; yes.\u00a0 Pull your staff forward with your excitement\u00a0and exuberance of their good efforts and teamwork.\u00a0 Point the way forward with well-placed acknowledgement and\u00a0appreciation\u00a0letting them know that we&#8217;re all pulling for the same goals.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/divi:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- divi:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Learning to work with our emotions is a critical managerial\u00a0skill\u00a0and staff deserve to know they mattered enough for us to make the effort.\u00a0\u00a0<br \/>Be full of heart and strong in spirit,<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/divi:paragraph -->[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][\/et_pb_section]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What&#8217;s\u00a0the deal with emotions at work?
