{"id":1845,"date":"2021-03-24T19:17:09","date_gmt":"2021-03-24T19:17:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/merrimanmanagementsupport.com\/?post_type=project&#038;p=1845"},"modified":"2021-03-24T19:17:11","modified_gmt":"2021-03-24T19:17:11","slug":"ah-oh-oh-no-march-18th","status":"publish","type":"project","link":"http:\/\/merrimanmanagementsupport.com\/index.php\/project\/ah-oh-oh-no-march-18th\/","title":{"rendered":"Ah Oh &#8211; Oh No  March 18th"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[et_pb_section fb_built=&#8221;1&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.9.0&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221;][et_pb_row _builder_version=&#8221;4.9.0&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221;][et_pb_column _builder_version=&#8221;4.9.0&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; type=&#8221;4_4&#8243;][et_pb_image src=&#8221;http:\/\/merrimanmanagementsupport.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Drawing1-2.jpg&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.9.0&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; title_text=&#8221;Drawing1&#8243; hover_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; sticky_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; width=&#8221;29%&#8221;][\/et_pb_image][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.9.0&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; hover_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; sticky_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243;]<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We&#8217;re all human.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And being human we all share\u00a0some basic emotional responses to external stimuli.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the big ones that I see turning up at our co-ops quite often\u00a0is this:<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<em><u>&#8220;Ah oh \u2013 oh \u00a0no!\u00a0Some staff are upset at me&#8221;<\/u><\/em>\u00a0response.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It usually kicks in after we\u00a0have\u00a0changed\u00a0something like\u00a0someone&#8217;s schedule, implemented new service expectations, or\u00a0made\u00a0any kind of\u00a0decision\u00a0that affects staff&#8217;s life\u00a0and\u00a0they\u00a0are\u00a0not happy.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This automatic\u00a0&#8220;ah-oh &#8211; oh no&#8221;\u00a0knee-jerk response is usually accompanied\u00a0by a good stiff wave of jitters and self-doubt.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;<em>Oh no, I want good staff morale and my people to be happy. Am I doing\u00a0something wrong?\u00a0 Am I being a bad uncaring and unfeeling boss? I felt I was doing what was right for the co-op but now I&#8217;m confused.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And down we spiral into the rabbit hole. This response\u00a0has taken\u00a0the solid ground right out from beneath us.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If I may, I&#8217;d like to offer a few viewpoints that might help us get our feet back underneath us.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One.\u00a0 Someone\u00a0being\u00a0upset at\u00a0us is not a bad thing \u2013 it is a human thing. Staff sometimes get disappointed and upset when things go in a direction they wish were different. If we can learn to make room for some staff upset without turning it into something we have done that is bad we will be able to navigate from a much more stable place within ourselves. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two.\u00a0\u00a0A knee-jerk\u00a0emotional response\u00a0when leading and managing usually doesn&#8217;t\u00a0lead anywhere we want to go. Let&#8217;s stop and ask ourselves what response\u00a0is needed in a case of upset. Sometimes it may just be listening with an understanding heart and moving forward. Other times it may not need our attention and just needs some space while things are moving forward. What we pay attention to grows so it is important we pay attention deliberately not reactively.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Three.\u00a0We cannot \u201cmake\u201d staff be happy nor do we have that responsibility. That responsibility belongs to the employee.\u00a0 Our responsibility is to provide a positive, well run functional workplace where staff have every opportunity to be happy and some room to resolve their upsets productively. Our focus is how we can all work together to make the co-op better for each other and the community.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes we&#8217;re all human.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a beautiful thing and one of the most wonderful\u00a0things about it is that we can learn to turn those knee-jerk emotional responses\u00a0into positive paths forward that help all involved.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][\/et_pb_section]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We&#8217;re all human.
